    La differenza insiemistica A \ B contiene tutti gli elementi di A che non appartengono a B. Allo stesso modo, B \ A è l'insieme degli elementi di B non appartenenti ad A.

    Nella ricerca matematica, la teoria degli insiemi è studiata per la sua importanza a livello di fondamenti e assiomi di tutta la matematica.

    A livello più elementare, gli insiemi sono un modo utile d rappresentare categorie di oggetti: aiutano a evidenziare le relazioni tra essi e possono servire nel ragionamento logico.
